Tchaikovsky's classic, Swan Lake will come to Singapore's Marina Bay Sands this month. The Imperial Ice Stars will perform a frozen version of the ballet in the award-winning 'Swan Lake on Ice', which comes to Marina Bay Sands' Grand Theater from 29 August 2011. Tickets go on sale from 24 June. The shows will be part of a two-year world tour that spans around 22 countries which started in UK last year. The troupe will feature 26 world, European and national championship skaters, who between them hold more than 250 competition medals.

Garuda Indonesia has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus for the purchase of 25 A320 Family aircraft. The deal covers 15 standard A320s followed by 10 A320neo aircraft for operation by the carrier's domestic low-cost unit, Citilink. They will replace its existing Boeing 737 fleet. The deal makes Garuda a new customer for the Airbus single-aisle product line. "The A320 will be a new addition to the Garuda family and has been selected after a very thorough and lengthy evaluation process," said Emirsyah Satar, President & CEO Garuda Indonesia. "The combination of comfort for passengers, proven reliability for high frequency services and low operating costs made the A320 the clear favourite to enable Citilink to develop its full potential in the competitive low cost market."

The Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) has launched a specialist unit known as the International Events Unit (IEU) to focus on bidding for international events. The unit will look at bringing more sports, arts and cultural events to the country, and is expected to contribute MYR427 million (US$141 million) in gross national income and provide 8,036 job opportunities to Malaysia by 2020. Boeing and Kuala Lumpur-based Malaysia Airlines (MAS) have announced the airline has exercised an option to purchase 10 additional Next-Generation 737-800s. The order is valued at more than US$800 million at current list prices. The airline still has purchase rights for an additional 10 Next-Generation 737-800s remaining from their initial 2008 contract. The announcement was made at the Paris Air Show by Boeing Commercial Airplanes Vice President of Sales & Marketing, Marlin Dailey, and MAS Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, Azmil Zahruddin Raja Abdul Aziz.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Spain Tourism Board have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at boosting tourist arrivals to Spain. Under the agreement, both parties will jointly explore and implement activities to promote tourist traffic to Spain, by way of SIA’s daily Boeing 777 services between Singapore and Barcelona. Both have agreed to fund advertising and promotional campaigns, as well as fam trips for trade and media. "This agreement underscores our confidence in the potential and allure of Spain, as well as our commitment to developing and promoting tourism from Southeast Asia and other parts of the Asia Pacific to Spain,” said Tan Chik Quee, SIA’s Senior Vice President of Marketing.

Thai Airways International (THAI) has held a Buddhist anointing ceremony for two new wide-bodied aircraft. Today at 08.39am, Somdej Phra Maha Racha Mangkalajarn, the abbot of Wat Paknam, presided over the ceremony for THAI's new Boeing 777-200ER and Airbus A330-300 at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport. THAI's President, Piyasvasti Amranand, was present at the ceremony. THAI’s new B777 has been named 'Pathumwan', while the A330 has been given the title 'Si Ayutthaya'. Both planes are powered by Rolls Royce Trent engines, and offer in-flight entertainment systems with more than 100 movies, 500 music albums, 60 games and 150 documentaries. The 292-seat, two-class B777 will operate on international routes to Johannesburg, Oslo, Milan, Auckland, Brisbane and Melbourne, while the 299-seat, two-class A330 will operate to Nagoya, Fukuoka, Osaka and Shanghai.

Daily direct flights between Hong Kong and Bali have been launched by Indonesia's national flag carrier, Garuda Indonesia (GA) - complementing twice-daily flights to Jakarta. The scheduled Hong Kong-Denpasar service departs daily at 15:45 hrs from Hong Kong International Airport, returning from Bali at 10:00 hrs. Bali flights are aboard brand new Boeing 737-800 'Next Generation' aircrafts in Garuda's modernised fleet, with the Jakarta service aboard both 737-800s and new Airbus A330-200s. Pandaw Cruises has announced plans to launch a new river vessel in Myanmar in January 2012. The RV Katha Pandaw will be the company's eighth ship and will feature just 16 staterooms. This smaller, lighter vessel will be capable of undertaking cruises into remoter areas in the December-April low-water season. The ship's first two voyages - the 14-night Irrawaddy or 10-day Golden Land cruises - are now open for sale. Meanwhile Pandaw has confirmed that it will be retuning to Laos next year. Cruises are expected to start in late 2012.

Jakarta is targeting 21 million tourists in 2011, up 14.3% from the 17.5 million it attracted last year. Indonesia’s Lion Air is planning an initial public offering (IPO) in late 2012 or early 2013, in an effort to raise up to US$1 billion. Local media reported that the carrier would issue offer up to 30% of the company’s shares, with the funds being used as a reserve. AirAsia has signed a new joint venture with CAE, the flight training services company, to form an aviation training centre that intends to provide services for airlines across the region. The centre, to be named the Asian Aviation Academy, is the first project for the newly-formed JV company, Asian Aviation Centre of Excellence Sdn Bhd. It is intended to provide AirAsia and other airlines with training services for pilots, flight attendants, engineers, ramp handlers, guest services staff and management. Pilot training programmes at the centre will be available from 1 July and non-pilot training programmes will commence on 1 October 2011. The training centre will be located at what is now the AirAsia Academy, a short distance from the low-cost carrier terminal in Sepang, Malaysia.

Tourism Australia has signed a new commercial agreement with Singapore Airlines (SIA). The three-year agreement, which takes effect from 1 July 2011, will see Tourism Australia and SIA jointly fund a range of tourism promotion activities aimed at attracting more overseas travellers to Australia. The new deal extends a relationship of more than 20 years between the airline and the national tourism board. Tourism Australia's Managing Director, Andrew McEvoy said that SIA is a key partner in delivering international visitors to Australia and will help the industry achieve its long-term growth target of doubling overnight tourism expenditure from AU$70 billion to AU$140 billion (US$74 billion to US$149 billion by 2020).

The romantic-comedy, in which a beautiful North Korean spy Myung-Wol (Han Ye-Seul) goes to South Korea in an attempt to kidnap a popular Korean male entertainer Kang Woo (Eric), had many scenes filmed at the iconic Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, which is a venue sponsor for the show. Cambodia has started constructing a new road along its border with Thailand, the China Daily has reported. A ground-breaking ceremony for the 144km road was held yesterday in the presence of the country's Prime Minister, Hun Sen. The road will become the first national highway stretching along the Cambodia-Thai border, in the country's northwestern Banteay Meanchey province. The road, which is being funded by a US$72 million loan from China, will take 36 months to complete.

India and Myanmar will develop trade along the historic Stilwell Road when a new border crossing opens at the Pangsau Pass. The Press Trust of India (PTI) reported that the development is intended to boost Indian trade not only with Myanmar, but also China and Southeast Asia. Currently there is no customs post on the Myanmar side of the Pangsau, with the nearest official station located 160km away. A dual-lane road connecting the Indian side of the border is expected to be completed in March, while the PTI revealed that China is considering linking the Pangsau Pass to the Chinese highway network. The Pangsau Pass, which lies at an altitude of 1,136m, was nicknamed ‘Hell Pass' by Allied solders in World War 2 due to its difficult terrain.

The Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV) announced on Saturday that it has commissioned a new airport project in the country's northern province of Thanh Hoa. Local media reports suggested that the new VND2.6 trillion (US$133 million) airport would be developed 30km from the provincial capital, initially handling up to 250,000 passengers per year. This capacity will be increased to one million passengers by 2020.

The first river tour in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) launched on Saturday, taking tourists from Bach Dang Wharf in the Vietnamese commercial hub's District 1 to the Painter Village in District 7. The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) said that the new tour is one of several routes on the Saigon River which the city's tourism department is planning to open up to tourists. Last year, the HCMC city government drew up a plan to develop river tours from the city to neighbouring provinces, even as far as the Mekong Delta province of An Giang and Cambodia. The city will also now build new wharfs for tourist boats.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has increased its fuel surcharges. Following a rise in the price of jet fuel, which is now above US$95 per barrel, SIA and SilkAir have increased their surcharge from between US$3 and US$25 per sector. The surcharges will now range from US$25 for Economy Class tickets on Southeast Asian routes to US$205 on First Class tickets to the Americas.
